Progressive Point: This week, federal judges in Texas and Wisconsin struck down voter suppression laws designed to exclude Americans from the democratic process. Those laws, as well as Virginia's Voter ID law, were passed as part of a concerted, conservative, nationwide effort to deny valid voters their constitutionally protected right to vote.

In America, we cherish the fundamental right of all citizens to vote and hail the leaders who fought to secure that tradition. But conservatives would disregard our heritage and values, blocking thousands of legal Virginia voters from casting ballots in order to stop nonexistent fraud. Conservatives will do anything to win and if they can't count on your vote, they'd rather it not be counted at all. We've never solved anything in this country with less democracy and we won't now.

  • In Texas, the Department of Justice struck down their voter ID law because it would specifically suppress Hispanic voters. In Wisconsin, a judge ruled against the voter ID legislation because it would disqualify perfectly qualified voters. (ABC News, March 12, 2012)

  • Del. Mark Cole (R), the sponsor the voter suppression legislation, admitted that he didn't know of one example of voter fraud. (YouTube)
