Virginia voters' anger at the War on Women

March 22, 2012

A new Quinnipiac poll of Virginia voters shows that women strongly disapprove of new anti-abortion legislation at the same time the disapproval of Governor McDonnell and the State Legislature is also on the rise.

Progressive Point: Governor McDonnell and conservatives in Richmond ignored their constituents so that they could wage their War on Women and new polling demonstrates Virginians' anger. Instead of tending to our transportation needs and working to improve our economy, they disregarded the voice of the voters and choose a conservative crusade against women's health.

Despite all this, Bob McDonnell continues to insist that the conservative war on women is a figment of our imaginations. Virginians obviously disagree. Our representatives need to stop these ideological attacks and get back to making the Commonwealth a better place to work and raise a family. Our legislators must listen to their constituents and reject the War on Women.

Get the Facts: According to the Quinnipiac poll:

  • "Voters say 72 - 21 percent that government should not make laws which try to convince women seeking an abortion to change their minds." The majority of Virginia voters also preferred the old law that limited people to one handgun purchase a month.

  • Disapproval of the job Gov. McDonnell is doing has increased 8% since Quinnipiac's last poll on February 9thand at its lowest ever since they began this poll in June 29, 2011. His net positive is also down to 21 percent today from 34 percent last month and even worse among women.

  • "The State Legislature's negative 38 - 47 percent score is a 19-point shift from a 47 - 37 percent positive approval rating February 9 and the first time the legislature has received a negative grade."
