Turkey of the Year Award
November 21, 2011
This morning, ProgressVA delivered a turkey to Governor Bob McDonnell's office to commemorate his receipt of our first annual "Turkey of the Year" award. McDonnell was awarded the honor in recognition of his "stewardship" of Virginia's finances, his use of gimmicks to mislead and confuse Virginians concerning the state of Virginia's budget and his insistence on a cuts-only approach to closing our deficit.
The Progressive Point: Under Governor McDonnell's watch, 64% of Virginia corporations pay no corporate income taxes while middle class families pay taxes on every dollar they earn and spend. With a projected $1B deficit on the horizon, big businesses and the 1% must start paying their fair share. Virginia corporations have thrived thanks to their use of the roads middle class Virginians paid to build, the workforce middle class Virginians paid to educate, and the protection of police and firefighters middle class Virginians paid to hire. Its time for big business to repay the investment Virginians made in their prosperity and start paying their fair share.
Get the Facts:
- States that have cut the most spending over the past several years have lost the most jobs.
- Since the recession hit, most Americans say the best way to reduce the deficit is to get rid of tax breaks to millionaires and eliminate giveaways for oil companies.
- Over the past decade earnings for middle-class Americans actually fell. In fact, working Americans' wages are now a lower percentage of our economy than they've ever been.
