Transportation Needs Sustainable Funding
October 10, 2011
The Roanoke Times and Richmond Times Dispatch are both reporting on Virginia's transportation funding problem. The Commonwealth will soon be required, by statute, to spend all transportation dollars on road maintenance, leaving none for the construction of new roads or other important transportation needs.
The Progressive Point: Providing the infrastructure to move goods and services is a vital function of government. Not only does investment in new roads and public transportation create jobs and grow our economy, but without it we fail to attract new business and economic activity. In order to plan for the future and kickstart our economy, we must establish a sustainable source of transportation funding. Shifting the commonwealth's responsibilities to counties is a lack of leadership and only increases our problems and costs in the long run.
