The company George Allen chooses to keep

September 26, 2012

The Washington Post reports, "Virginia Republican Party officials on Tuesday ordered their Mecklenburg County affiliate to remove photos portraying President Obama as a witch doctor, a caveman and a thug from its Facebook page. The altered photos have been on the Mecklenburg County Republican Committee's page for months but drew attention outside the rural southwestern enclave after a luncheon event this week with Republican Senate candidate George Allen... ProgressVA, a group that supports Allen's Democratic opponent, former governor Timothy M. Kaine, found the images among 100 'wall photos' posted on the committee's Facebook page."

Progressive Point: Virginia needs leaders with backbone who'll stand up for what's right. George Allen has failed a basic test of leadership by campaigning with a racist who sees no problem in denigrating our president because of the color of his skin . Elected officials and community leaders should value and respect every citizen.

All Americans deserve to be treated with respect--no matter the color of their skin or their ethnic background. From his "macaca slur" to his campaign stops with an unapologetic racist, it's clear Allen doesn't share our values when it comes to diversity and respect. We are all judged by the company we keep, and it is clear the company George Allen is choosing.
