Protect My Healthcare

March 26, 2012

On Friday, the Affordable Care Act turned two years old. For three days starting today, the Supreme Court is hearing a historic six hours of arguments on theclearly constitutional health reform law. At the same time, Republicans in the U.S. House and Senate are again attempting to repeal the law.

Progressive Point: The Affordable Care Act works and is benefitting millions of Americans and Virginians. All of us deserve the same quality health care that members of Congress get. The ACA put Virginians in charge of their health care, but Republicans in Congress and across the country would change that.

Challenges to the ACA are not about the law, but are political games that will take those benefits away. Politicians want to put insurance companies back in charge. To protect healthcare, we must protect the ACA.

Get the Facts: If opponents of health reform prevail, Americans and Virginians will lose:

  • Small businesses will no longer have tax credits to help their employees obtain coverage.  Without the tax credits, businesses either don't provide coverage or continue to see their costs increase. Higher healthcare costs equal less job creation. (Small Business Majority)

  • 2.5 million young adults, including 60,000 Virginians, will no longer be able to get health insurance through their parents. (Healthcare.gov)

  • The Medicare "donut hole" will be reopened. 3.6 million Medicare beneficiaries on fixed incomes will now again have to pay $2.1 billion out of their own pocket for prescription drugs. (Healthcare.gov)

  • Insurance companies will again be able to discriminate against you for your pre-existing conditions.  Before the ACA, insurance companies could deny coverage because of medical problems in your past - including fights against cancer, surgeries, or even being a woman. (ProgressVA)

  • Preventative services will no longer be required coverage as part of your health insurance. 86 million Americans (1.5 million Virginians) received preventative care such as mammograms, colonoscopies and well-child visits in 2011.  Without the ACA, those coverages are no longer guaranteed and far fewer illnesses will be caught early and treated less expensively. (Virginian-Pilot, March 22 2012)
