McDonnell and Cuccinelli continue their war on women

July 17, 2012

The Richmond Times-Dispatch reports, "Attorney General Ken Cuccinelli is refusing to certify new abortion clinic regulations that were made less burdensome for existing clinics under a version passed last month by the Virginia Board of Health. The decision sets up another potential battle between those on both sides of the issue, as well as moderates and conservatives on the board, to which Gov. Bob McDonnell on Friday added Dr. John W. Seeds, a staunch anti-abortion physician."

Progressive Point: Virginia families are looking for bipartisan solutions on schools, roads, and job creation. Ken Cuccinelli and Bob McDonnell have left that behind to advance their personal political agendas and careers. In another signal that they don't trust Virginia women to make their own health care decisions, Cuccinelli attempted to veto women's health clinic regulations that he feels don't go far enough to shut down women's reproductive health access.

Bob McDonnell and Ken Cuccinelli are substituting their radical, right-wing ideology for sound policy making and evidence-based medicine. If they cared about keeping women safe and healthy, McDonnell and Cuccinelli would be trying to expand women's health access, not shut clinics down and mandate transvaginal probes. The next front in the War on Women is here and now in Virginia.

Get the Facts:

  • On June 15, the Virginia Board of Health voted 7 to 4 to adopt an amendment, over the objection of AG Ken Cuccinelli's office, intended to force existing women's health clinics to close, thereby ending legal abortion in Virginia, by requiring them to comply with building standards for new hospital construction. (Richmond Times-Dispatch, July 17, 2012)

  • In addition to family planning services, Virginia's women's health clinics provide life-saving cancer screenings and health care services like STD screenings. (ProgressVA, June 14, 2012)

  • Also via ProgressVA, among other requirements, the proposed permanent regulations would:

    • Threaten patient privacy and safety by allowing inspectors to request lists of all current patients and remove patient medical records from clinics.

    • Intimidate clinic owners and providers of first-trimester abortion care by allowing inspectors access to clinic's proprietary information, including security plans, without any requirement for the information to be kept confidential.
