Karl Rove's health care lies

June 20, 2012

The Richmond Times-Dispatch PolitiFact Virginia reports, "American Crossroads says Kaine promoted a $500 billion cut to Medicare. The Affordable Care Act contains about $564 billion in cost-savings measures for Medicare over 10 years. But the definition of a cut means there would be a reduction in spending. That's not the case here. Medicare spending will continue to expand. The law will slow the projected rate of growth. Kaine did advocate for the health care reform legislation, but he never called for a $500 billion cut to Medicare. We rate American Crossroad's statement False."

Progressive Point: Virginians cherish their right to vote and a trustworthy and transparent democratic process. Karl Rove's baseless political attacks are below the standards we expect for any election. Our elections are about having an honest debate on ideas, and smears and falsehoods have no place in them.

Karl Rove doesn't want you to know that thanks to health care reform nearly 50,000 Americans with pre-existing conditions now have insurance. He doesn't want you to know it has provided 32.5 million seniors with accesss to free preventive care benefits or the benefits have also been extended to 2.5 million young adults under age 26. Virginia families are benefiting from increased health care access thanks to legislation Tim Kaine supported. Dishonest attack ads have no place in Virginia.

Get the Facts:

  • American Crossroads GPS, who is the conservative advocacy group paying for the ads, is spending $1.2 million in secret money to run attack ads against 5 different Democrats running for Senate. (ThinkProgress, April 25, 2012)

  • Via the Richmond Times-Dispatch:
    • "The Affordable Care Act has provided insurance to nearly 50,000 Americans who had been locked out of the insurance marketplace because of a pre-existing condition such as asthma, hypertension or diabetes. What's more, by 2014, these protections will be extended to everyone."

    • The reform has provided 32.5 million seniors with accesss to free preventive care benefits.

    • Also due to reform, "more than 20 million women receive preventive services, such a mammograms and cervical cancer screenings, without a co-pay, deductible or any other out-of-pocket expenses. And these benefits come with a fair price tag, as the ACA ends the unconscionable discriminatory practices against women that have allowed insurance companies to charge women higher premiums -- even up to 150 percent more -- than men. "

    • Under the law, benefits have also been extended to 2.5 million young adults under age 26.
