Focus on participation in our democratic process
July 24, 2012The Roanoke Times reports the Voter Participation Center, "sent almost 200,000 forms to Virginians last month. According to its president, 15,000 of them resulted in new registrations so far. Those are people who can now help choose the next president." Progressive Point: Voting is a fundamental American freedom. Our democracy flourishes from increased participation, not less. With more than 2,000,000 eligible Virginia voters unregistered, it's more important than ever we focus on making their voices heard. Earlier this year, conservatives put up new hurdles that make it harder for law-abiding Virginians to vote. If these politicians can't count on your vote, they'd rather you not be counted at all. Now they're targeting efforts to expand participation in our government. Virginia never solved anything in this country with less democracy, and we won't now. |
