Fighting for Health Care Reform
December 2, 2011
The Roanoke Times reports, "As Gov. Bob McDonnell balances his ongoing opposition to the federal health care overhaul with the continued implementation of the law, he won't say if Virginia should establish a state-run health insurance exchange or risk having one imposed by the federal government."
Progressive Point: Thanks to health care reform, Virginians now have access to the same heath care as their congressmen, insurance companies won't be able to deny sick people coverage nor deny coverage to people because they have pre-existing conditions. But Governor McDonnell and other conservatives' ideological opposition to health care law may end up keeping Virginians from receiving the full benefit of the legislation by denying us millions of dollars in federal funding for implementation.
Health care reform is already helping small businesses by making them eligible for tax credits for providing insurance to their workers, and the credits will get even bigger in 2014. Conservatives' delay tactics will put Virginia behind in implementing health care reform that many Virginians desperately need. McDonnell and his conservatives allies must stop their partisan politics before it starts literally hurting Virginia's health.
