Conservatives ignore Virginia voters
February 23, 2012
The Washington Post reports, "A Virginia Senate committee voted along party lines Thursday morning to approve a so-called 'personhood' bill , despite strenuous opposition by those who argued that the broad measure could prohibit birth control and in vitro fertilization." Earlier in the day, conservative legislators also pushed the anti-abortion ultrasound bill through committee as well.
Progressive Point: Conservative lawmakers are flat out ignoring their constituents. Despite polls, despite thousands of protesters in Richmond, and despite over 30,000 petition signers, conservatives are continuing to ignore Virginians' clear objections to these ideological intrusions into women's private medical decisions with horribly invasive and medically unnecessary measures.
Virginia's voters are being disregarded. Our voice is not being listened to, and despite tarnishing our national reputation, conservatives are continuing their crusade against women. Instead of reporting on how Virginia is the best place to raise a family and do business, reporters from across the country are writing about conservative lawmakers playing doctor. Our representatives must listen to the voice of Virginia's voters and drop the conservative crusade and get back to work.
