Compromising women's health
July 3, 2012
The Virginian-Pilot reports on the regulations on women's health centers, "The goal of the 2011 legislation was to make abortion more difficult - all but impossible - to obtain in Virginia by setting prohibitive standards for clinics. Given the low incidence of complications from abortion, and the absence of similar physical requirements for other outpatient clinics, that's an easy deduction, even without the stated intentions of the activists behind such legislation. The same folks who pushed the clinic provisions in 2011 also fought for the 2012 bills that would have required some women to have an ultrasound wand inserted into their vagina before an abortion and would have extended the rights of 'personhood' to conception in Virginia."
Progressive Point: Government bureaucrats have no place making women's health care decisions for them. Conservatives in Virginia are pushing regulations designed to severely limit women's access to safe and legal abortion. Unable to overturn women's constitutional protections, a right-wing minority is now seeking to eliminate women's health clinics and abortion access out of existence.
These new health clinic regulations are about one thing: ideological extremists substituting their opinions for the judgment of medical professionals. Politicians have no place in our private health care decisions.
