Clean air for all

April 4, 2012

The Washington Post reports, "The League of Conservation Voters, Mom's Clean Air Force and the Environmental Defense Fund announced this week that it had made a two-week, 'seven-figure' TV ad [link] buy in support of the Environmental Protection Agency's decision last week to limit greenhouse gas emissions from power plants."

Progressive Point: Protecting our kids means making sure they don't get sick from breathing dirty air. New EPA regulations will create limits for coal-fired power plant emissions and benefit the health and environment of all Virginians. Conservatives like George Allen are attacking the new regulations with baseless partisan rhetoric. They are more interested in appeasing their polluting corporate donors than protecting the health of Virginia kids.

Virginians want leaders who will protect their priorities, including families' health. George Allen's priority is defending his corporate donors--today that means attacking new rules to help keep us healthy.

Get the Facts:

  • These are the first national industrial carbon pollution standards for power plants and are "essential to protect public health and reduce the effects of unchecked global warming including increasing smog and triggering asthma attacks and other health consequences." (President of the League of Conservation Voters, Washington Post, April 4, 2012)

  • Under the regulations, new power plants will be allowed to emit no more than "1,000 pounds of carbon dioxide per magawatt hour of electricity produced. The average U.S. natural gas plant, which emits 800 to 850 pounds of CO2 per megawatt hour, meets that standard; coal plants emit an average of 1,768 pounds of carbon dioxide per megawatt hour." Therefore the new regulations will effectively ban any new coal plants from being built. (Washington Post, March 26, 2012)
