ProgressVA Slams Ken Cuccinelli's Refusal to Certify Targeted Regulations of Abortion Providers

Cuccinelli prioritizes his extreme ideology and political career of the health of Virginia women

ProgressVA today strongly criticized Attorney General Ken Cuccinelli's refusal to certify regulations passed by the Virginia Board of Health that would grandfather existing women's health clinics into the proposed building requirements, a provision deemed necessary by women's advocates for the clinics to remain open.

ProgressVA Executive Director condemned Cuccinelli's decision, stating, "The Attorney General has no basis to exert veto power over these regulations. In Ken Cuccinelli's desperate crusade to regulate away reproductive health access for Virginia's women, he's willing to completely ignore the parameters of the Attorney General's office. By way of reminder to Mr. Cuccinelli, I would note that the role of the Attorney General is as a consumer advocate. The only thing Cuccinelli is advocating for is shutting down women's health clinics and preventing thousands of Virginia women from accessing safe and legal reproductive health care."

The ACLU of Virginia has repeatedly determined that "there is nothing in the Code (or the recently enacted law, Senate Bill 924, defining abortion providers as hospitals) that requires the Board to impose extensive, burdensome construction requirements that have no relation to the safety of the services that women's health centers provide."

The Board of Health voted to amend the proposed permanent regulations to grandfather in existing clinics for the architectural requirements in June after over 2,000 members of the ProgressVA community contacted the Board in opposition of policies that could shut down women's health clinics. Hundreds of Virginians protested outside the meeting in a demonstration organized by OpposeTRAP. On Friday, Governor McDonnell appointed another anti-choice ideologue to the Virginia Board of Health.
