ProgressVA calls on Lt. Governor Bolling and Governor McDonnell to oppose attacks on the right to vote

Virginia Legislators Ignore Constituents, Pass Legislation Making It Harder for Thousands of Virginians to Vote

In the face of widespread opposition, the House of Delegates today passed HB 9, a measure that will make it harder for thousands of Virginians to vote. In addition to the hundreds of Virginians who rallied against this bill yesterday at Capitol Square, thousands of Virginians have contacted their legislators, Lt. Governor Bill Bolling, and Governor Bob McDonnell to voice their opposition to this and similar measures. Proponents of the legislation say it's needed to combat voter fraud, although they have been unable to point to single instance of voter impersonation to justify their assault on democracy.

Today, ProgressVA called on Lt. Governor Bill Bolling and Governor Bob McDonnell to oppose HB 9 and similar measures in the State Senate. "Legislation that makes it harder for citizens to participate in our democracy has no place in Virginia," said ProgressVA Executive Director Anna Scholl. "Instead of pushing unnecessary measures to fix a problem that doesn't exist, our representatives should be focusing on initiatives to support Virginia's working families. Governor McDonnell and Lt. Governor Bolling must stand with Virginians and oppose these attacks on a fundamental American freedom."
