NEW DIGITAL AD: LOCAL SMALL BUSINESS OWNERS TELL THEIR STORY OF STRUGGLING TO KEEP DOORS OPEN, HARMS OF TRUMPTAX

Owners of Gray Funeral Home Question why Congressman Taylor voted for massive corporate tax-cut while working families in Virginia struggle

CAPE CHARLES, VA. – Today, For Our Families Virginia released a video featuring Juanita and Thomas Godwin, owners of Gray’s Funeral Home, a small, family-owned business in Cape Charles. The home has been in the family since 1895 and the Godwins are finding it more and more difficult to keep its doors open. Since the passage of the Republican tax bill, the Godwins have experienced continued economic hardship, despite promises that the measure would benefit working families and small businesses, made by politicians like Congressman Scott Taylor who voted for the measure.

Since its passage, the Republican tax plan has served as a boon for wealthy corporations recording record profits, while workers have seen decreased or stagnant wages. Without the money that the TrumpTax promised, the Godwins are struggling to keep their doors open and have been forced to cut back on labor as a result of rising expenses of the funeral industry.

“I felt it was important to speak out because so many businesses are having problems right now,” said Thomas Godwin. “There was a time when I could pay people fairly and still make money, but not anymore. I can’t even hire. The TrumpTax isn’t going to fix or change that. I don’t expect to see any benefit from it at all.”

Small business owners in Virginia, like the Godwins, are demanding to know why Representative Scott Taylor voted last year for the Republican tax plan, which has reduced taxes for large corporations permanently by 40 percent at the expense of hardworking American families.

“Scott Taylor is not representing the small business owners of VA-02,” said Gina Baldwin, a spokesperson for Progress Virginia. “Working class families suffer while big corporations get massive tax breaks – this is unacceptable. It’s time for Congressman Taylor to start representing his constituents and affording them the opportunity to achieve the American dream rather than lining the pockets of his campaign donors.”

The video is available for viewing here.
